http://rochesterappliance.com/blog/?p=675

This is what customers look for when buying a smart appliance prioritized by percentage.

By manufacturers of "smart" appliances:
* product performance: 30%
* innovation: 22%
* environmental friendliness: 15%
* product quality: 14%
* design aesthetics: 10%
* product safety: 9%

The top priority is no surprise as most consumers are looking for energy star rated appliances. What surprises me is that only 14% of consumers polled say that appliance durability is important to them. I've been hearing the term "throw away society" more and more these days. Its seems to me that society is to blame. Society can get quality, efficient appliances if it didn't buy machines that are known to fail within a few years. The mass public needs to understand that it controls the market, not the manufacturers.(or government for that matter)

When I was doing strictly service on the road, I would see customers go out and buy junk when I would condemn their machine. I would hear back from them right after it was out of warranty. They would curse at it and tell me it was nothing but problematic. I would come over to fix their 1.5 year old machine and find out it was a major problem thus not worth fixing. (here's the kicker) Then they would go back out and buy the cheapest machine they could find, hoping they didn't end up with the same result! Salesmen will sell you whatever they can. They're not going to tell you what's well built because they don't know what's under the hood and they've never worked on them. That's why I got into sales....to do my part in stopping this madness.

Over the past three years, Samsung has introduced a full line of laundry products, with prices ranging from $800 to $1,600. The $1,600 have recently ranked rather high in consumer reports. The brand is known for its vibration reduction technology in its top-line washers. Samsung has added a steam-cleaning option to its washers.

The down side to Samsung is it's parts distribution. Very often I will need to wait at least 2 weeks for a part to arrive for a customer. It has been a source of agitation having to wait for these parts while a customers appliance is out of commission.

Samsung is a well made product but it's parts distribution is still a let down when the appliance needs service.

Whether you like it or not, bisque appliances are getting phased out industry wide. Think about how ugly those green appliances are from the 60's. This is the way we will imagine bisque appliances one day.

It's getting more and more difficult to find bisque appliances for customers. The demand isn't there anymore, so the appliances companies are pulling back on production of this color.

Some, like stainless steel appliances, have shown lasting appeal. Most of the others come and go, dating your home in the process. Why do some last? Because they embody Sensible Style. In other words, they work well and look great. The ones that fade away most often look good for a while, but ultimately their lack of practicality or comfort or durability—or even just their sheer overexposure—dooms them to passing status.

Then again stainless may just be another trend and will be getting phased out in 40 years. Who knows...
